Upcycled guitar picks from old bank cards!

A nice idea to save throwing away old bank cards and adding to the waste, take a template from your guitar pick, draw around it on your old bank card with a permanent marker and cut out with a pair of scissors or stanley knife to make your own upcycled guitar pick - I think the photo says it all!

If you are feeling slightly less adventurous, you could always buy a pick maker or plectrum punch, which does the job for you and still reuses your card.

Have a go, a save that plastic card from the tip!

Philips HR1863 Viva Juicer: Honest Review

After many months of blending our green juices, we finally decided to buy ourselves a proper juicer. After searching the internet for a while, we decided on the Philips HR1863 Viva Juicer as we had seen Jason Vale using one and he seems genuinely evangelical about them.

After looking around, and with the recommendation of the Juice Master, we thought the Viva juicer suited our needs best as it was quite cheap, only 79.99 at either Argos or Amazon, compared to the others on the market but not the cheapest.

After using it for a week, I thought I'd write a few things we've learned about our Philips Viva juicer.

Pros

Most fruit and veg fit into the chute whole although larger apples, some tomatoes and beetroots will need to be cut in half to go down.

It produces 750ml of fantastic tasting juice which is perfectly suited to our needs.

It is simple and easy to clean but takes longer than the 1 minute promised on the box - it takes about 3 minutes by my reckoning, with me being neither ultra fast or slow when it comes to washing up. I don't know where they got 1 minute from but that seems unrealistic for most normal people.

Cons

Firstly, it is mostly made of plastic and does feel a bit weak but, if you have the money and are worried about build quality, the next model up in terms of price will cost >100 so it's quite a jump in price.

It says makes up to 2L of juice but I'm not sure how this is possible, for two reasons. The first is that the jug that comes with it is only 750ml max. The second being that after filling one jug, it needs to be cleaned as the pulp fills up inside so much that it cannot produce juice efficiently thereafter - if you try to make 2 full jugs of juice in a row, the second will be full of pulp and lumpy. For this limited amount, it is better suited to people who live alone or with a partner rather than a family.

Which leads on to my next point - it needs to be cleaned after every jug of juice made. Not a major problem but a tad annoying as, even if you want the same juice, the extraction of juice is poor when it is full to the point of it pouring out much of the pulp/fibre into your juice.

Summary

In short, the Philips HR1863/01 Viva Juicer is an ideal juicer for couples or single people looking for a good quality juicer at an affordable price. It makes good juice but is not ideal for large quantities. It is of reasonable build quality and should last a few years but if you are looking for a family size, the XL version should suffice whereas the Aluminium model would be perfect for those looking for a sturdier machine. Both of these machines will cost significantly more, however.

That's all for now - any questions, leave them in the comments section! Happy juicing and stay healthy!

Dunnet Head, Caithness, North Scotland

While up on the north coast of Scotland, a trip to Dunnet Head is well worth it!

Contrary to popular belief, it is Dunnet Head which is the most northerly point of mainland UK, rather than John o'Groats, as is often said.

Sligachan Camping, Isle of Skye, Scotland

Having just returned from a trip to Skye, I thought I'd pen something on visiting the area of Sligachan.

Camping at Sligachan - Isle of Skye, Scotland

Having just returned from a trip to Skye, I thought I'd pen something on visiting the area of Sligachan.

Firstly, we stayed at the Sligachan Campsite, which has a stunning panorama of the surrounding mountains and takes about an hour to get to from the the Skye Bridge, it's also about 9 miles from Portree. There is a a hotel and a bar, Seumas', which also cater for others.

The Sligachan Campsite is run by older gentleman, with the help of his 2 dogs. He lives on-site and collects the money in person by doing the rounds - no cards accepted here! The nearest ATM/cash machine to Sligachan is in Portree, as we found out. The campsite has basic facilities but views to die for, as you can see below. It's also a perfect jumping-off point for walks in all directions, ranging from fun to serious. One place we kept seeing images of was Loch Coruisk (or Loch Coire Uisg, meaning 'caudlron of water's in Gaelic) - it's about 8 miles from Sligachan but there is the possibility of returning by bus from Elgol, approximately 5 miles from Loch Coruisk.

Bali Videos: Bali Plane Crash at Ngurah Rai Airport

Incredibly, no-one was killed in this plane crash. Lionair has a poor record, being blacklisted from EU airspace and also having had 5 pilots arrested for testing positive to drug use while on the job. Our message of the day: DON'T FLY LIONAIR!!! We do not get commission but Garuda & AirAsia both have much better safety records and are worth an extra $20! Be safe people!

Bali Videos: Bali Timeshare Scam

From the same journalist whose undercover video caused two corrupt policemen to lose their jobs, another video has been doing the round on the internet revealing a timeshare scam in Bali and, as with the previous video, when questioned about their guilt, the offending people make light of it and laugh. As I always tell people who are visiting Bali, don't make eye contact and just keep walking!

Bali Videos: Bali Police - Tourist Bribes and Beers

A video causing a stir in Bali - A Dutch undercover journalist, posing as a tourist, is stopped by police at a busy crossroads in Bali for not wearing a helmet. A routine donation soon turns into a friendly chat and a couple of beers. Both of the unsuspecting officers have since been sacked but will it actually make a difference to the way police in Bali behave towards tourists in Bali?

Nusa Surfwear - Batik Surfwear Made in Bali

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you ended up in Bali?

I am a surfer/traveller and what we call in Spanish a buscavidas. Basically experiencing life through different ways of living and occupations. I’ve worked in restaurants, construction, commercial fishing, language interpreting and when my partner Kara and I landed on Bali we got ourselves work as teachers and also got inspired to start nusa and debali.

How long have you been running Nusa?

We started with the nusa and debali clothing lines in 2009, designing, producing in collaboration with small home-industry factories in Bali, and selling around surf camps and in California when Kara would go there on holidays. We had no experience on the garment/fashion industry and no funding backing us up. But we had to give it a try. So we invested our little savings and monthly salaries and we went for it. We got really good feedback. The next logical step was to open the store over a year ago.

How about the Nusa concept - why is it different to your average surf/lifestyle store in Bali?

It is different in many ways. From the interior design that includes real roots embedded on the tinted cement floor to having the great majority of products hand-made in Bali and not having any big corporate brands. And of course having our independent clothing brands that rediscover and explore Indonesian Batik designs. Even our hand-made nusa fins and surf boards have batik fabric inlay.

The Nusa Store, on Jl. Uluwatu 22km, Bukit.
Where did your inspiration to start Nusa come from?

We got inspired by two things. First and foremost the beauty of Indonesian Batik designs. We loved it from the very beginning. We couldn’t believe no surf brand or street, casual or fashion wear geared to bules was doing anything with batik at the time. And that, in Bali! One of the major fashion centers of the world! And secondly, we felt that as adult surfers we couldn’t find much diversity in the surf clothing industry which seemed geared to a teenage style, so we wanted to create something cool and meaningful. Something that you could wear in the water or go out with friends or your date without being a logo billboard. We believe there is an artistic dimension to the surf life style and I guess, the more you live it, the more you become aware of it and appreciate it.

Any new clothing lines/projects you are particularly excited about?

Yes, we are in the midst of producing our new line for next season and it’s coming out really cool. We have also recently implemented a daily surf video report from the Bukit that has sent us also good feedback. Apart from that, on the website we have articles and surf fiction stories and we want to keep creating and exploring through that dimension of surfing. We believe, in the case of surf journalism, that it has been watered down and candied to accommodate to an industry that heavily relies on teenage stoke. Nothing wrong with teenage stoke, but we are not teenagers. Yet we are surfers.  In the case of surf fiction, I think there is an immense universe to explore. We definitely want to get into that. We also have some original ideas for some videos. We are excited about giving something new and original to surfing, its life style, and its industry. But it all takes time, especially in Bali. Bali time, you know?

Check the nusa site or store for more!
You've kind of touched on it above, but could you say more about why you specifically decided to make batik into surfwear?

Because we are in Bali, we are in Indonesia. For Indonesians, batik has for centuries been a beautiful way of seeing and expressing the Universe around them. It’s a repetition of intricate patterns that when you look close you see something and from far you see something else or even many something 'elses' replicates it. It is like an allegory of life and creation. Many artistic, social and philosophical extrapolations are implicit in Batik designs. And, of course, it is beautiful.

Finally, tell us where can our readers find you?

We are on Jl.Uluwatu km 22 on the Bukit, just before the entrance to Dreamland Resort or www.nusasurfwear.com, where you can also get Bali tides and our daily video surf report from Bali.

Thank you for your time!

Thank you.

Bali Videos: Nyepi Monster Making!

Every year our neighbours make a monster for nyepi in front of the house - here's a timelapse sequence of last year's monster. They make them for the ogoh-ogoh procession which takes place every year in Bali and is believe to ward off the evil spirits. This happens on the eve of nyepi before the island begins meditation.

Note that the whole of Bali also shuts down for a whole day for nyepi! Be warned! In 2013, nyepi will fall on 13th March! Bali is also the only place in the world which shuts down its international airport for 24 hours for a religious and spiritual holiday - crazy but true! Enjoy nyepi and enjoy Bali!
